Wheel sizes vary and are selected according to how the bike will be used. 26” wheels are usually mounted for more challenging routes. These wheels are the strongest and most manoeuvrable, but have poorer roll than larger ones. 27.5” wheels are ideal for maintaining a good balance of manoeuvrability and stability. Many manufacturers use these wheels on bikes with low frames to maintain good roll and a low centre of gravity. 29” wheels are used on many mountain bikes. They are characterised by good roll and make for slightly better suspension.

Front suspension has a shock-absorbing suspension fork for comfort, better grip when riding on different terrains or around obstacles, and safer descent.

The chain is exposed for easier access when you need to clean or replace it. This is important, because due to the higher load when pedalling uphill and all the dirt that gets in, mountain bike chains wear out the fastest.

It is rarer for these bikes to be made with mudguards, but for clean clothes and a comfortable ride in inclement weather, they are a must and can be fitted additionally.

The saddle is narrow for a firm and sufficiently flexible sitting position when going uphill.

Rarely made with dynamos so as to maintain a light construction. Instead, helmet lamps are used for greater visibility, especially on turns.
